Leifur Kolbeinsson is the head chef and owner of La Primavera, one of Iceland’s oldest restaurants, offering fine Northern Italian cuisine made with high-quality local produce. Leifur began his culinary journey as an intern in 1981 and graduated from the Icelandic Culinary School in 1986. After gaining experience in various kitchens, he opened his own restaurant in 1991, which he has been running ever since. Later, he co-founded a major catering company at Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre, further expanding his influence on Iceland’s food scene. Leifur’s ambition is to develop Italian cuisine within his beloved community. Most recently, he successfully launched a second location of La Primavera — continuing his mission to create and celebrate honest, high-quality Italian food for the people of Iceland.

Why do you work in the culinary industry?

This has been my dream since I was a child.

What sparks your passion for creating and collaborating on culinary experiences?

Learning new things and making connections with others who are as passionate about the food industry as I am.

What matters most to you when it comes to dining?

Family, friends and good company.

A good glass of Italian wine.

Onion, potato and rosemary pizza bianca, and another favourite: ’nduja with mozzarella.
