Sointi Jazz Orchestra: Poems and Letters

Poems and Letters is a new concert work composed by Oskari Siirtola for the Sointi Jazz Orchestra and a vocal soloist, which will have its premiere on 10 October 2025 at 20:00.

The work explores artistry in the early stages of Modernism, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, through the writings of prominent visual artists of the era. The lyrics of the compositions include excerpts from letters, poems and other writings by, among others, Vincent van Gogh, Ellen Thesleff and Egon Schiele.

Musically, Poems and Letters blends modern jazz with influences drawn from both art and popular music. Rich tonal colours, multilayered textures and the spontaneous energy of jazz improvisation reflect the liberated palette and bold expression of the Modernists. The work features the rising star of Finnish jazz, singer-songwriter Selma Savolainen, whose album Horror Vacui won the 2024 Emma Award for Best Jazz Album. The orchestra is conducted by Rasmus Soini.

The Sointi Jazz Orchestra is known for its carefully curated concert programmes and open-minded approach to new music. Since 2013, the ensemble has premiered numerous exciting works, both as its own orchestra and in collaboration with leading domestic and international soloists.
